The Nordic countries especially as they consistently rank as the safest places in the world with high gender equality, low crime rates, and stable governments – making them extremely safe for female travelers.
I’ve traveled solo to all of these places and had great experiences. I felt safe, it was extremely easy to get around, and I even met other female solo travelers to connect with. I highlighted some of the most popular cities in these countries, but in general the countries outside of the major cities are safe for female solo travelers.
Reykjavik, Iceland
Based on the Global Peace Index (GPI), which is a global measure for peacefulness, Iceland has been on the top of the list since 2008. Iceland has some of the most progressive laws for gender equality and has extremely low crime rates. There is no shortage of stunning and untouched nature to explore here. Female solo travelers can go on hikes, hit the hot springs, drive around the island, and explore the city without worries.
Helsinki, Finland
Finland is ranked among the top destinations for female solo travelers. The locals are friendly and respectful and the country in general has extremely low crime rates. The public transportation is easy to navigate and you can explore throughout the night with no problems.

Norway is a beautiful destination for solo females. From museums, saunas, and waterfront views there is a lot to do solo here. Take in the picturesque scenery and just relax in some of the third places scattered around town. Although if you go outside of the cities it can become quite remote, but it is still extremely safe with very low crime rates.
Stockholm, Sweden
Stockholm is a great destination for female solo travelers who want the true European feel. As it has kept a lot of the historic architecture and cobblestone streets. It is the largest urban area in the Nordics that consists of 14 archipelagos. From exploring the hipster area of Södermalm, going on a ferry around the archipelagos, checking out the Nobel Museum, or seeing the Royal Palace. There is enough to keep any solo traveler busy.
Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen is another historic city that is great for female solo travelers. Go to the Tivoli Gardens, see the Little Mermaid Statue, or just awe at some of the futuristic Scandinavian architecture. There is great public transit and so many cute cafes to grab a bite to eat solo.
Zurich, Switzerland
Switzerland ranks as the top destination for female solo travelers. It’s a destination you can go and just relax and take in the stunning scenery. In the summer you can go to the canals in the city and take a swim with the hundreds of other locals or in the winter hit the slopes. I met another female solo traveler here who just hiked Matterhorn by herself, so it’s all possible!
Dublin, Ireland
This is one of the most lively places for female solo travelers. There is so much live music and pubs pouring Guinness, but also nature and historic sites. Book a tour to see the Cliffs of Moher or go to the famous Trinity Library. There’s lots to keep solo travelers busy and you might just meet others through the Irish hospitality.
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Amsterdam is also an extremely fun and lively place for female solo travelers. There is no shortage of cute cafes, cobblestone streets to walk down, or fun storefront to stumble into. Visit the Anne Frank house (make a reservation a couple weeks out), rent a bike, or just walk along the canals and find a bite to eat. It’s extremely friendly to solo travelers from all that there is to do.
Brussels, Belgium
Brussels is a great place for female solo travelers who love food. You have to get a Belgium waffle (get one from a food truck so you know they’re fresh), try some Belgium chocolate, and get some french fries with mayo. You will also find a huge selection of unique Belgium beers you won’t find anywhere else, as they don’t export their beer. The streets are extremely safe to walk and explore during the day or night.
