Benefits of The Scandinavian Sleep Method

May. 05, 2025

Benefits of The Scandinavian Sleep Method

When I moved to Sweden, I noticed something interesting at the hotels we stayed at, and when we began shopping for a bed. Instead of one large duvet, there were two smaller ones on the bed. Curious, I looked into it and discovered that this is the typical sleeping arrangement in places like Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. I wanted to see why and what the benefits were.

Scandinavia is known for its cold winters, and historically, people needed to stay warm at night. Duvets (or täcken in Swedish) became a popular bedding choice because they provided warmth without being as heavy as a blanket. However, because people’s body temperatures vary, sharing a duvet didn’t always work out well, especially in a cold climate. Therefore, having two separate duvets was the perfect solution. Also, if you’ve never used a duvet, I HIGHLY recommend; they are the best.

I have to say, when my husband and I slept with this method, it made sense for us. My husband tends to sleep hot and toss and turn throughout the night, while I can fall asleep and wake up in the same position.

Upon further research, there are numerous benefits of the Scandinavian sleep method that give you overall better sleep, such as fewer disruptions, personal space, temperature control, no blanket battles, easy to wash, and overall coziness.

1. Better Sleep

  • It’s all about comfort. When each person has their own duvet, they can adjust it to their preferred temperature. No more fighting for the blanket or waking up too hot or too cold. This simple fix can help both partners sleep more soundly and wake up feeling more refreshed.

2. Fewer Disruptions

  • With separate duvets, movements don’t disturb your partner. If one person tosses and turns or gets up during the night, the other person won’t feel it. It’s a game-changer for couples who have different sleeping habits, leading to a much more peaceful night’s sleep.

3. Personal Space While Sleeping

  • We all have different sleep needs. Some people need more space to stretch out or move around. With separate duvets, each person gets their own little cozy bubble, making it easier to find the perfect sleeping position.

4. Perfect Temperature Control

  • Everyone has a different idea of what the ideal sleep temperature is. One person might like to sleep with a heavy duvet, while the other needs something lighter. Separate duvets allow both people to adjust their bedding exactly how they want, helping them sleep better and more comfortably.

5. No More Blanket Battles

  • This one is pretty self-explanatory! With separate duvets, you can kiss the classic “blanket tug-of-war” goodbye. No more worrying about whether your partner is going to steal your side of the covers in the middle of the night.

6. Easier to Keep Clean

  • Having your own duvet means you can wash it as often as you like, without affecting your partner’s schedule. It’s a little thing, but it helps keep things cleaner and more hygienic, which is always a win.

7. A Little Piece of Scandinavian Comfort

  • This method isn’t just practical—it’s part of the cozy, relaxed approach to living in Scandinavia. It’s designed to make your sleep experience more comfortable and stress-free, so you can get the best rest possible.

Let me know if you try this method and how you fare!
